The SmokeHouse Hotel
One of the most popular hotels in Cameron Highlands is The Smoke House Hotel. The moment you mention the name of this hotel, you will always be able to associate it with Cameron Highlands, because there does not seem to be any other Smoke House Hotel around. Sometimes, it may also be called Ye Olde Smoke House Hotel. It is situated midway between Tanah Rata and Brinchang.
The hotel was built in 1939. It has the English Tudor style design, and probably is one of the most original Tudor designs in Cameron Highlands. It keeps its original English appeal, and even offers a special traditional English breakfast to its patrons and a noon tea that is just like how they had it in England during the good old days. The lovely garden is a bonus, and the noon tea can be had there too. It is probably one of the few hotels that are still able to offer some really English experience in Cameron Highlands, and with excellent interior decorations that are similar to most English houses even until now.
Many people will likely agree that the most interesting feature of this hotel is its architecture. However, not many people can agree on the service, which is not quite as English as it should have been. Some people had complained about bad service in the English hotel, which then does not live up to the expectations of its patrons for all things English. The food served in its restaurant is also not really agreeable to many people. Another negative review about this hotel is that it is quite old, and maintenance may have lagged behind in many ways.
Many hotels in Cameron Highlands do not have air conditioning or heater, and the Smoke House Hotel is one of them. During warmer nights, you may wish to open up the window just for some fresh air, but please do be forewarned against this if you are staying on the ground floor. Just as any English style architecture, the hotel has no high fence, and there had been reports of thieves reaching out through the open window to grab your belongings when you are not aware of it.
Overall, the faults of this hotel can be attributed to the fact that it is quite an old hotel. It needs a facelift and some customer service training to live up to the expectations of a truly English hotel.
